This is the point where counties Offaly, Roscommon and Galway meet and the River Suck joins the Shannon: hence the strategically placed and massive artillery Fortification dating from Napoleonic times, now restored and in use as a restaurant. The village of Shannonbridge is an old and long established angling centre
Children will love the 9km rail trip through Blackwater Bog, near Shannonbridge. Learn about the bogs, how they were formed and worked through history and even try a little turf cutting! On the journey you will also learn about some of the more interesting archaeological finds in the bog.
The train carries a maximum of 53 people at a time, and travels on 3 foot narrow gauge track. The trip takes an hour and is well worth it. Along the journey you'll learn more about the boglands, their history, flora and fauna and the fascinating things being found in bogs like thousands of years old bog butter.
Also nearby, and of particular interest if you have children to entertain, is the Ashbrook Open Farm and Agricultural Museum (April-Sept daily 10am-7pm; £2/2.54), with plenty of farm animals, donkeys, rare birds and farm implements.
Clonony Castle , a mile or two further inland, is a ruined sixteenth-century tower house with a nineteenth-century reconstructed barn - to the side of which are buried Anne Boleyn's sisters, Elizabeth and Mary
The village has one of the oldest bridges still in use over the River Shannon, completed in 1757.
A tourist office is located at the west end of the Main Street.
