Things to do in Oudenaarde

Why do we recommend stopping here?

An attractive town with some beautiful buildings. Oudenaarde is famous for weaving and tapestries and a museum in the Cloth Hall displays typical "Verdures" - tapestries depicting scenes of nature with predominant green and blue colours. Nowadays the river Scheldt cuts through the town, but until the 16th century there was a town on each bank: Oudenaarde and Pamele, which later merged. The Broodstraat, Nederstraat, Einestraat and Hoogstraat are the main shopping streets that still have some of the charm of old medieval alleys.

What is there to see?

The town has more than 100 classified monuments - you certainly shouldn't mon’t miss the late-Gothic Town Hall with its Cloth Hall, which is simply stunning - a perfect example of the Brabant late Gothic style.

What can I visit?

Apart from the beautiful Town Hall, Oudenaarde has some other historically important monuments : the Bailiff's House, the Abbey of Maagdendale, Our Lady's Hospital with the Bishop's Residence, the Saint Walburga's Church, the Church of Pamele, the Black Sisters' Convent, the Meat House, the Beguinage to name just a few.

Is this place famous for anything?

First Sunday of May: Flower Market (Grote Markt). Last weekend of June: Adriaan Brouwer Beer Festival

Do any famous people live here?

The painter Adriaen Brouwer was born in Oudenaarde but moved to Holland at a very young age to study in the workshop of Frans Hals. He returned to Oudenaarde in 1630 where he died 8 years later. He is famous for his scenes of drunks and the sometimes sarcastic representations of his contemporaries.
