When I booked this Le Boat boating holiday with friends, I didn’t really know what to expect.

When you stand on deck, you realise how everything around you slowly takes shape as the light changes. For example, the reflection of trees on the water shifts with every small ripple. Some mornings, the sun rises behind the boat, warming the deck almost without me noticing. On others, it spills across the water ahead; a ribbon of light along the canal.

From my time on the water, I’ve come to appreciate the particular pleasure in simple things. The first sip of coffee, for example, somehow tastes a bit different here. The feel of the deck under bare feet. The cool air in my lungs. The fragrant scent of water and leaves.

I lean against the railing, mug in hand, and breathe in, savouring how each morning carries its own smell.
